Am I a Candidate for Dentures or Implants?
If you have severe tooth decay, missing teeth, bone loss, or other oral issues, full or partial dentures and implants can restore your smile.
Dentures
Dentures are made to replace all or just some of your teeth. Partials are also dentures, but they do not require all of your teeth to be missing or extracted. Most often, multiple tooth loss is needed for dentures.
If you have only lost one or two teeth that are next to each other, a dental bridge is recommended. A dental bridge is a false tooth that is placed between two teeth with an adhesive. Sometimes a dental appliance, or wire, is used to hold them in place.
The best candidates for dentures are those who have multiple missing teeth, have sensitive teeth, or have a lot of tooth decay resulting in extraction. For patients without enough jawbone mass, dentures are the recommended option.
The cost of dentures is often considerably less expensive than most other options. In some cases, full dentures or partial dentures can be made the same day. Dental insurance may cover much of the cost of full dentures or partials.
Dental Implants
Another possibility to replace missing teeth is dental implants. This dental procedure gives you a complete set of new teeth or can be used to replace one, two, or more. A dental implant can be put in place right after a tooth extraction. The dentist will perform the implantation immediately after the dental surgery to remove the tooth or teeth.
A dental implant is a titanium post that is surgically placed into your jawbone, or immediately above it, beneath your gums. In time, your jawbone and gums heal and become attached to the implant, securing it in place. Once it has healed, which often takes about several months, a permanent crown is placed on the post.
A dental implant can be used to replace a single tooth or multiple teeth. They also hold removable dentures or place permanent dentures such as Nobel Biocare – All-on-4®. A powerful advantage of dental implants is that they do not move or shift in your mouth while eating or talking. For diabetics, this movement can be harmful, causing sores in the mouth.
The implant teeth feel, act, and look like real teeth which can greatly increase patients’ self-confidence!
The best candidates for implants are those with a healthy jawbone and gums. Because implants involve a surgical procedure, they are not always a good fit for everyone. Dental insurance will not completely cover implants, usually paying less than 10 of the cost.
